His coaching philosophy centers on low-heart-rate training, smart recovery, sustainable progression, and building a foundation of health that supports performance in sport and life.
Path Projects Co-founder of a running apparel brand built around quality, functionality, and a love of the outdoors.
The Running
Floris has experienced breakthrough runs and brutal bonks, which makes him a coach who understands both the highs and lows of endurance sport. His first marathon was miserable, hitting the wall and finishing in 4:11. Later, he ran the Boston Marathon in 2:44, an 87-minute improvement achieved through an approach of slowing down in most training sessions, integrating some speedwork and learning to truly listen to the body and mind.
Over the past 10 years of running, he has:
- Logged more than 17,000 miles (27,000 km)
- Achieved personal bests of 1:19 (half marathon), 2:44 (marathon), and 17:47 (100 miles)
- Completed the 6 original World Marathon Majors (Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, New York)
- Finished 60+ half marathons and 30+ marathons and ultramarathons
Key Lessons from The Show
Through hundreds of interviews, Floris has extracted principles that separate good from great in running and in life:
- Why Eliud Kipchoge approaches challenges with gratitude and calm, not aggression, and how this mindset unlocks sustainable performance in any domain
- How Courtney Dauwalter pushes through 100-mile races with quiet focus rather than forced intensity, a lesson in managing discomfort and staying present
- Why Dr. Stephen Seiler's 80/20 training formula helps you achieve more by doing less, applicable to work, creativity, and personal growth
- How Dr. Phil Maffetone's approach transformed Floris from a 4:11 to 2:44 marathoner by slowing down to speed up, the power of patience and building a strong foundation
- Why Kilian Jornet's simple approach to training creates lasting endurance without burnout, relevant for anyone building sustainable habits
- How Sally McRae turns setbacks into stepping stones, and why adversity often precedes breakthrough in any meaningful pursuit
Beyond Running
Floris spent over a 15 years building brands and businesses:
- Co-Founder of Path Projects running apparel
- VP of Marketing and Innovation, Tilly's (NYSE: TLYS), a $600M public company
- Co-founder and CEO, Love vs. Design, acquired in 2015
- Sr. Director of Marketing, Volcom (Public traded at the time)
This business background informs his approach to coaching and content: strategic, systems-oriented, focused on sustainable results rather than quick fixes.
The Philosophy
Floris believes your best years don't have to be behind you, whether in health, running, or life. The answer isn't grinding harder. It's training smarter, building sustainable habits, staying present, and creating an approach that keeps you strong, healthy, and happy for decades to come.
The moto on the back of his book: Run with ease. Live well. Realize your potential.
When not running trails or recording podcast episodes, Floris enjoys sitting in ice baths, playing pickleball with his wife, going on adventure runs that inevitably become misadventure runs (thanks to his terrible sense of direction), and making his two daughters laugh.
He lives in Southern California.
